Flooring Calculator — Boxes & Square Feet

Running short mid-install is every DIYer's nightmare. Enter your room and box size for an exact box count with a realistic waste allowance — rounded up to full boxes. Free, instant, no signup.

Quick answer

Multiply length × width for square footage, add 10% waste (15–20% for diagonal layouts), and divide by your box coverage. A 12×15 ft room needs about 10 boxes of laminate at 20 sq ft per box.

10%

10% is standard for straight lays. Use 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.

Rounded up to full boxes — stores don't split them, and one spare box is cheap insurance for future repairs.

How the calculation works

  1. Room area: length × width in feet. For L-shaped rooms, split into rectangles and add them up.
  2. Add waste: multiply by 1 + waste%. Cuts at walls, doorways, and closets eat material — 10% is the minimum for a simple rectangle.
  3. Divide by box coverage: the sq ft printed on your box. Coverage already accounts for plank size.
  4. Round up: you can only buy whole boxes, and one spare box is your repair kit for the future.

Tips from the pros

  • Acclimate 48–72 hours in the install room before you start. Cold boxes in a warm house will move.
  • Mix planks from 3–4 boxes as you lay — shade varies slightly between boxes, and mixing hides it.
  • Measure twice, buy once. A second trip for two boxes risks a different dye lot.
  • Underlayment matters. Budget for it separately — it's sold by the roll, not the box.
  • Keep a full spare box stored flat somewhere dry. Discontinued lines make future repairs impossible without it.

Common questions

Measure room length × width for square footage, multiply by 1.10 for 10% waste, then divide by the coverage per box printed on the box. Round up — stores don't split boxes. Example: a 180 sq ft room × 1.10 = 198 sq ft ÷ 20 sq ft/box = 10 boxes.
